| The first Weekend Warriors practice was held in a dirty Squirrel Hill basement, in early January 2001. DJ had met Aaron Nowalk looking for a new band, and they discussed a possibility of getting together to writing some serious punk music. On that first night accompanying them, was Zak Sovek (AKA the ZMAN). The three found quite a quick chemistry a brewin'! Randy Griffith showed up to the next practice and low and behold, after many beers, and an inspirational cup of kool-aid, a complete band was formed. After many nights of having the traditional "after practice meetings" at Silky's (a bar in Pittsburgh's Squirrel Hill), the boys ran into the problem of coming up with a name that really fit the music and persona of the band. It came down to mediocricies like "Frank and The Beans", "Bad and The Uglies", and some other really lame ass names. Finally the name "Weekend Warriors" popped up, and was an unanimous favorite. The name was quite fitting, considering our intense work schedules only allowed us the savoring of our favorite beverage on the weekends (for the most part). Anyhow.... After a successful SouthEastern US tour, and the release of a 7 inch on Germany's DIM records, Aaron Nowalk decided to find greener pastures in the mountains of Colorado. Unfortunatly this meant leaving the band that he loved. A great friend, an excellent musician, and one hell of a drinker that guy was (Jaeger? Damn near KILLED her!)... Well, this left The Weekend Warriors with no choice but to find someone to replace our lost friend, and Sweet Sassy Mo Lassy did they ever! Joe Bruce entered the band and brought them exactly what they had with Aaron. Great musical opinions ,amazing drumming techniques, and just an overall great guy to hang out with. Since the inception of the Weekend Warriors in January of 2001, the band has played numerous shows in local, and out of town venues. They have played HITS New Jersey and Viva La Punk (the biggest punk festivals in the world), released music in Europe, and the mid to far east, and The USA. They have toured all over Southern and North-Eastern USA, with more tours to come, and are currently in the works for their full length debut CD on Street Anthem Records. So this Friday night, turn off the TV and put your grandma to bed early, go grab yourself a corned beef sammich from Primanti's, crack open an Iron City, and drink away all your worries... You're a Weekend Warrior!!! |

The Weekend Warriors - We're here! Where's The BEER?
Homegrown Records So I won this disk from a raffle at the 10yrs Late Scooter Club (awesome kids from Cincinnati, classic Vespa and Lammbretta scooter club). It was the season opener rally that was held at the end of March. A few of the guys from the band were there for the weekend long scooter festivities they had donated some of their merch. for the rally raffle. I had the chance to talk with the Pittsburgh PA natives and they were really nice guys, they also had prize-wining Lambretta scoots! Anyway, this is a music review so on with it. The Weekend Warriors are pretty traditional Oi; growling vocals with hot guitar licks soaked in beer and sweat. This Pittsburgh quartet's latest is a six-song DIY CDR Oi romp. True to the genre the disk may not be a technical marvel but it doesn't need to be. It is a bar room sing-along, blue-collar excuse to pound um'. You can almost hear the "Iron City" pulsing through their veins. The Burg is a city that is gritty and deeply rooted in blue-collar pride; the Warriors are a shining example of music reflecting a dot on the map. -Clark Bettawreckonize - http://www.bettawreckonize.com/album_reviews/alrev_w.html |
WEEKEND WARRIORS - demo CDR
Ahhh after reviewing two pop punk bands I had to find a Punk or Oi! demo to review! I'm glad I picked this cause it was a breath of fresh air. I guess this band would be labeled "Streetpunk/Oi!" but after listening to this I don't think the label totally fits. There is a lot of other styles getting mixed in here and there is some really good guitar work going on that most Oi! musicians probably wouldn't be able to pull off. The band has a 7" coming out on Dim and I don't know if it contains any of these songs but I would get it if I was you. There is a band they remind me of and it's right on the tip of my tongue but I can't remember it right now and even if I did no one would probably know who they were. Definitely more on the rock side of Punk, and by rock I don't mean all that melodic California type streetpunk, I mean real ROCK like hard rock metal stuff but mixed in so well with Punk that it's hard to classify. "Let's Drink" is my favorite and the most Oi! sounding song of the six, if every song they played was like this I would definitely want to release something! WEEKEND WARRIORS- 'LET'S DRINK!' 7"
This is 3 tracks of Pittsburgh drinking Streetpunk at it's finest! You've got a mix of aggression and melody with some fantastic singalong choruses and guitar lines. This is 100% genuine, it's so unpretentious and doesn't try to be anything other than what it is and you can really tell that these guys have a real passion for this and that they really enjoy it and believe me, that shines through. You can hear it, loud.

The Weekend Warriors "One Goal in Mind: Demo 2002"
I hate classifying music into categories such as "punk, oi!, streetpunk, rock"; whatever you want to call it, so, I'm not even going to try. That, in my opinion, just weakens the so-called "scene" with it's cliches of what music "should" sound like. And forget about references to other bands, I only mention things like that if a band seems like a blatant rip-off of another band. This CD exemplifies the true nature of what underground music should be, a combination of various styles of music meshed together offering a refreshingly original alternative to your average band. When I heard these guys were recording again, I couldn't wait to hear it. As anyone knows that has seen this band live, the last recording did not do them justice. The last demo, even though the songs were good ... the quality of the recording did not capture the energy that these guys put into a live show. That is not the case with this one. "Just Cause for a Revolution" starts out kickin' and screaming setting the tone for the entire album. A great song to start out with, showing off the music talent that these guys possess on many levels. Each song has great intros, bridges, leads, bass lines, and a great rhythm section that never slacks off holding everything together. Strong, emotional singing and backups are another great element of this band, especially in "This is the Law", where DJ and Zac switch off singing during the verses, that sounds really good. The work that this band puts into one song could be stripped apart and made into an entire album for your average "punk" band. Although, I think that may work against them sometime; there's so much going on at certain points of a song, things start to get a little jumbled up and you have to really listen to what is going on with the bass and drums. If anything, that is the only somewhat negative thing that I could possibly say about these guys; and that could be fixed up with a little more mixing. My favorite songs on this demo ... I'd have to say "My Own Change of Pace" and "Date Rape Richie". If I really had to pick the weakest song on the CD, I'd have to say "13 Hours a Day". I'd love this song if it wasn't one of theirs, it just seems to be lacking some of those Weekend Warriors' trademarks that I mentioned before. For what I feel this song may be lacking musically, definitely makes up for with great lyrics that we working class guys can relate to. Almost forgot something, the re-recording of "Let's Drink", the great drunken anthem (the Animal House sample was a nice touch). I love this song and am up there singing along everytime, but I can only see them having one song like this, they have progressed beyond this and I think should focus their energy on more complex songs. All in all, this is a great album. If you're into noisy, bitch about the government shit, don't bother picking this up; you'll never relate to it. Mature, talented music that we older guys can appreciate. John Tanish - titanish@aol.com Pittpunk - http://www.pittpunk.com |
